Veenstra & Ashton’s Joy Following British Open Success

Richard Veenstra and Lisa Ashton reigned supreme at the BDO British Open in Bridlington on Sunday afternoon. For Veenstra, it was an excellent weekends work as he completed a superb double as he claimed both the British Classic and the British Open, following the completion of the ‘double’, Veenstra has provisionally qualified for the Grand Slam of Darts, the only possible way that he can be knocked out of contention is if the winner of World Masters is not in a qualification position.

Veenstra completed a 6-3 win over Germany’s Michael Unterbuchner who’s had quite a year on the BDO circuit. Veenstra was relatively untroubled over the course of the event as he enjoyed victories over Wayne Willis (3-0), Carl Hamilton (3-1), Will Kershaw (4-1), Brian Link (4-1), Scott Waites (4-1), Stephen Rice (4-1) & Dave Ladley (5-2). It was certainly a superb showing from the Dutchman, in what will be a highly memorable one for him moving forward.

As for the Ladies, it was Lisa Ashton who claimed the British Open title. Ashton came runner up to Laura Turner just 24 hours previously in the British Classic event. Much like Veenstra in the Mens, Ashton was untroubled over the entirety of the event. In the final, Ashton saw off Fallon Sherrock 5-1 in what was a solid display from the ‘Lancashire Rose’.

En route to the final, Ashton saw off the likes of Claire Stainsby (3-2), Marlene Luby (3-0), Tania Weldon (4-0), Frances Lawson (4-1) & Anca Zijlstra (4-0).
