Austria’s Mensur Suljovic claimed his seventh PDC title and his second of 2019 as ‘the Gentle’ emerged victorious at PDC Players Championship 26 in Barnsley.
In a sensational final with Ian White, Suljovic managed to hold his nerve to come through a nervy deciding leg as he pinned D16 to wrap things up.
As for Ian White, the Stoke-on-trent star fired in a sensational nine-dart leg (the 40th of 2019) in the seventh leg, but it still wasn’t enough to brush aside the Austrian as the momentum of the game swung towards both players during what was a sensational way to end the day.
Speaking to the PDC’s Dan Dawson, Suljovic appeared relieved and ecstatic with the win, following his win on the European Tour in Vienna just a number of weeks ago.
“This was the best final for me”, said Suljovic after the win. “Ian’s a brilliant player, so solid, he a nine-darter and still lost.”
Mid-interview, Ian White stormed through to congratulate his opponent on the win in a typically Ian White humorous manner.
“I just need to keep going”, said White. “I played well yesterday, Daryl Gurney beat me, and he went on and won it. Mensur’s beat me and won the tournament.
“If everyone who beats me wins a tournament, then everyone will want to play me, and I don’t want that. I feel good, I’ve been playing well all year, I’m enjoying it, and hats off to Mensur, he’s playing well.”
Suljovic added: “This year, I’m the World Champion. Daryl Gurney, Ian White and Gerwyn Price are the best players on-form at the moment, and me!”
En route to the title, Suljovic opened the day with wins over Richard North (6-4), Gavin Carlin (6-2) and Ryan Joyce (6-4). In the last 16, the Austrian produced a phenomenal display to see off Glen Durrant 6-2 with an average of 112.6!
In the last eight, Suljovic was pushed all the way by Spaniard Cristo Reyes, as the Austrian produced a 14-darter to move into the Semi-Finals.
Waiting in the last four, was Wales’ Jonny Clayton, and once again, Suljovic had to produce an elite-level display to see out a 7-5 win over Clayton with an average of over 102.
