Finishing off the afternoon session on day one, the 6-time BDO ranking title winner Gary Robson took on Brunei’s Pengiran Mohamed in a preliminary round encounter.Robson got off to a great start, after a scrappy opening exchange, the Northumberland star took the opening two legs, which included a 15-dart leg as he took out 80 to take that second leg. The Brunei-based Mohamed held his own well despite being behind, and his efforts paid off in the end as he broke the throw of Robson to take the third leg as he took out 60. However, Robson rallied brilliantly as he fired in a 13-dart leg to break straight back and secure the first set.
Robson picked up where he left off as he fired in a spectacular 118 finish and a 15-darter as he moved 1-0 ahead in the second set whilst averaging around 91.
An on-song Gary Robson produced a phenomenal 158 finish in the very next leg to double his advantage in the second set, and his finishing statistics to the that point were quite remarkable as he hit 83% of his doubles attempted (5/6).
Robson wrapped up the second set with his third 15-darter on-the-spin as he picked out D8. Robson continued to dominate in the third set, as he took the first two legs comfortably despite surviving a missed dart at D16 for a 152 from Mohamed which would of raised the roof.
Robson secured the victory in what was quite a scrappy conclusion to this one with both players squandering opportunities to take the final leg. In the end it was D8 for Gary Robson as he secured his place in the first round as he will take on the reigning Lakeside World darts champion Glen Durrant tomorrow afternoon.
