Three-time World Champion Glen Durrant picked up his maiden PDC title on Sunday afternoon in Wigan as the Teessider emerged victorious at PDC Players Championship four. Durrant came runner-up last Sunday to Dave Chisnall, and ‘Duzza’ really does like Sunday’s in Wigan. It’s been a whirlwind last monthor two for Durrant who won his third consecutive BDO World Championship title at Lakeside in January before winning his PDC tour card just a week later.
Durrant admitted after securing his two-year tour card that his ‘dream’ was to play at the World Matchplay in Blackpool, and with £16,000 to his name in just two weekends, Durrant’s well on his way to acheiving that particular goal. Durrant secured the title following an 8-3 victory over Belgian stablemate Dimitri van den Bergh.
Over the course of the day, Durrant produced some simply spectacular displays with some great averages recorded. Over the course of PDC Players Championship Four, Durrant averaged 101.11 overall, with a first-nine average of 110.9. In total, Durrant fired in a total of 23 maximums in the eight matches that the Teessider came through.
En route to the title, Durrant enjoyed some impressive victories over the likes of Jamie Lewis 6-3 (100), Ritchie Edhouse 6-5 (103.6), Joe Cullen 6-3 (103.6) in which Durrant missed D12 for a nine-darter in the final leg. ‘Duzza’ then went on to see off Austria’s Mensur Suljovic 6-2 with a 99.2 average, then Durrant faced Blackburn’s Bradley Brooks who took Durrant all the way, but Durrant managed to defy a 100 average from the 18-year old to fire in an 11-darter to book his place in the Semi-Finals.
In the last four, Durrant produced his best performance of the afternoon as the three-time World Champion produced a scintillating display as Durrant averaged 109.3 in a 7-3 victory over Gerwyn Price in what was one of the matches of 2019 so far. In the final, Durrant saw off Dimitri van den Bergh 8-3 as the Teesside ace couldn’t quite believe what he’d acheived.
“I’m a very proud BDO champion. I’ve had the best two weeks, and I’m so grateful to the PDC for the opportunity of the Premier League. Everything’s just going so perfectly for me. People doubted me in the BDO, but now I’m a PDC champion.”
