Gary Mawson was in superb form in Los Angeles, California over the past weekend as he was crowned the 2018 Cosmo Darts Championship Darts Circuit Continental Cup Tour Champion. The Canadian who resides in the United States produced some fantastic display over the course of the weekend to pick up the title for the first time.
Mawson did reach the final back in 2015 as he lost out in a last-leg decider to Larry Butler, and despite coming so close to qualifying for the William Hill PDC World Darts Championship in December, Mawson soon put that disappointment to the back of his mind to go and win the Continental Cup. Following Mawson’s 8-5 win over Dan Lauby Snr on Saturday, the Canadian faced off against Dan’s son Danny Lauby Jnr who’s been playing some great stuff himself as of late, and it was a high-quality affair, but Mawson’s power scoring proved to be the difference as he averaged 90.4 in a 9-5 victory over the youngster.
Moving into the Semi-Finals, Mawson faced arguably his toughest test yet as he faced the no.1 seed and tournament favourite Chuck Puleo who of course is the US representative at the William Hill PDC World Darts Championship and the CDC 2018 Tour Champion. As expected it was a high-quality contest with both players trading 140+ visits for fun, but despite averaging two points less than Puleo, Mawson took his opportunities expertly as he went on to record a 10-5 victory over Puleo as he advanced to the final for the second time in four years.
In the final, Mawson faced a familiar foe in the form of ‘Big Daddy’ Darin Young. And, it was a dream final for the neutrals as both players gave it 100% as the standard was ridiculous, the first three legs of the final summed it up really as the legs were won in 13, 15 & 15 darts as Young opened up an early lead, but the Canadian reeled off three legs on-the-spin to open up a 4-2 lead as Mawson produced finishes of 96 and 116 back-to-back.
Gary Mawson’s finishing in the final was exemplary as he produced three ton-plus finishes en route to an 11-9 victory over Young to secure the title. The best leg came in the 14th leg as Mawson produced a magnanimous 11-darter (180, 134, 171, 32) en route to what was a huge win for the Canadian.
