With his first start of the 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship campaign, ‘Rovers striker Danny Graham fired in his goal of the season, which resulted in a 1-0 victory for Tony Mowbray’s side over Middlesbrough at Ewood Park on a sunny afternoon in Lancashire.

Graham emerged off the bench in the first couple of outings in the league, but earned a start against old club Middlesbrough following his fine showing against Oldham Athletic in the Carabao Cup in midweek. And after being the match-winner, the big forward admitted it was great for Rovers to earn a gritty three points on home turf.

“It’s a pleasing afternoon after what wasn’t the prettiest of games,” Graham confessed after the game to iFollow Rovers.

But we got the three points which is the most important thing.

“I feel that we didn’t get what we deserved in the first couple of games of this season, but we’ve got a first three points of the season, so hopefully we can get back-to-back wins and push on from there.

“We spoke about the game plan ahead of the game, with [Sam] Gallagher playing wide on the right and stretching them. I think it worked.

“We got the three points, everyone’s happy and we can take the confidence from the victory to move forward.

“It’s always nice to go in front after the two previous league results. Maybe we could have scored a couple more on the breakaway in the second half.”

It was a stonewall penalty from which Rovers earned the points, with Graham’s shirt almost being ripped off his back by visiting full back Anfernee Dijksteel.

And the frontman added that there were no doubts in his mind that he’d be the man to step up to the plate from 12 yards.

“I felt the shirt pull and he probably grabbed me for two or three seconds before the cross was put in,” he reflected.

“I made the referee aware of it and he’s seen it, so I’m delighted to have put the penalty away.

“I was always going to take it. I’m confident when stepping up and thrilled to get off and running for the season.”
