On day two of the 2019 BDO World Darts Championship at Lakeside, we witnessed drama, tension and some real quality on the big stage as another seed tumbled out of the tournament. The match of the day was without question, Richard Veenstra’s last-gasp 3-2 victory over Nigel Heydon in what was a fantastic match which had it all. Despite averaging 93, Heydon was denied by some brilliant finishing towards the end from the Dutchman who blew hot and cold over the course of the match. Heydon produced a barnstorming 132 finish in the final set to keep his hopes alive, but Veenstra prevailed in a sudden death leg which sent the Finder Masters runner-up into the second round as he faces Scott Waites.
Speaking of Scott Waites, the former two-time World Champion got his campaign off to a great start as he made light work of Belgiums Jeffrey van Egdom in a 3-1 victory. It wasn’t a vintage display from the former two-time winner as he averaged just 86.55, but he took his opportunities well, and as mentioned, he’ll face Wayne Warren in round two. Poland’s Krzysztof Kcuik completed a 3-1 victory over Denmark’s Brian Lokken in a preliminary round battle, the Pole was always in control really as he booked his place in the first round with no major scares. For Kcuik, he’ll take on the no.11 seed Dave Parletti.
Maria O’Brien stunned the Lakeside crowd as the Plymouth-based star dumped out Deta Hedman. For those involved in darts, it wasn’t too much of a shock as such really as Maria reached the final of the PDC World Championship qualifier recently, losing out to Lisa Ashton. But in the Semi-Finals of that qualifier, O’Brien got the better of Hedman, and Maria was always going to give Deta problems. O’Brien completed a 2-0 set victory, but the set play format wasn’t kind to Hedman who forced deciding legs in both of those sets, but It’s O’Brien who takes on Fallon Sherrock in the Quarter-Finals.
Speaking of Fallon Sherrock, the Milton Keynes-based ace was flawless in her 2-0 victory over Corrine Hammond. Sherrock produced an average of 89.67 in a 2-0 victory over the Aussie who just couldn’t match Sherrock. Roger Janssen of Belgium was also very impressive as he made light work of Wouter Vaes, Janssen never gave Vaes any sort of glimmer of a comeback as the Belgian enjoyed a 3-0 success to cement his place in the first round where he’ll face the no.3 seed Jim Williams.
New Zealand’s Mark McGrath booked a first round clash with the reigning BDO World Champion Glen Durrant as he saw off an injured Adam Smith-Neale with ease, Smith-Neale entered the stage on crutches as he’s recovering from a broken leg, but ultimately he was unable to challenge his opponent in the end as he failed to win a leg or attempt a dart at a double.
Rounding off the action on day two at Lakeside, Wayne Warren (pictured above) produced the best display of the tournament so far as he saw off his international captain Mark Layton in an emphatic 3-0 victory. Warren produced an average of 97.71 in what was a fine performance, Warren’s scoring power was tremendous, and Layton found it hard to match him at times. Warren’s first 9 average in sets 1-3 just highlights how well he was scoring. All of the stats from the match can be found below.
